preparing for this sunday's tour at the cascade house

this weekend, we’re preparing for tours at the cascade house, and to help enrich your visit, we’re speaking with the current custodians who share some of their favourite first-hand experiences.

can you tell us a bit about yourselves?

“we have worked in the video game industry for over 20 years. he’s a creative director and i’m an executive producer. we met in los angeles and then chose to move to vancouver to enjoy the natural beauty of the pacific northwest.”

what led to your appreciation of a west coast modern home?

“i used to visit my grandparents in medellin, colombia every other summer. their home had mid-century modern elements like terrazzo floors, indoor planters, and large windows. i knew i wanted a mid-century modern home one day.”

why did you choose this house over others?

“it’s truly one-of-a-kind. you have to see it, walk through it, and fall asleep to the creek that runs directly under it to appreciate what a special slice of the pacific northwest it is.

countless songbirds and hummingbirds visit year-round, along with sightings of bald eagles, owls, ravens, and herons. we’re flooded with natural light and over 40 windows, fireplaces, and a canopy of old-growth trees.

we wanted to sprinkle a little vacation into our lives every day. this house is magical with the creek beside it, so you can hear it from almost any room…it feels like being in our own fern gully.”

how does the home inspire your creativity?

“the natural beauty helps clear the mind and focus. all you need to do to forest bathe is open a window. the birds serenade you. the babbling brook grounds you. the sunlight dances through the canopy.”

what is a west coast modern home to you?

“a home that lives in harmony with its natural surroundings and respects the fragile ecosystem around it. it flows seamlessly from room to room, with lots of natural light and organic elements to encourage peace and connection to the outside world even when you are indoors.”

experience the cascade house for yourself. on tour this sunday.
