Cathedral House

Introducing the next West Coast Modern home.

We’re pleased to present the Cathedral House, a private commission by architect Lewis Morse, known for his design principles that would later be seen in the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Set on a forested ocean view site, the Cathedral House, with features reminiscent of the Pompidou, broke the mould with its rebellious all-exposed construction: the steel structure from which the floors are suspended is visible from the entrance, as are the giant timber cross sections, and the original post and beams from the 1950s mid-century modern home it was built upon.

The Catherdral House is a uniquely modern and warm family residence ready for its next custodian.

“In 2005, two aspiring builders purchased a mid-century home in West Vancouver’s Eagle Harbour neighbourhood. They approached architect Lewis Morse with a plan to transform the dwelling perched on a ridge overlooking the Strait of Georgia.”

Lewis Morse
Canada’s Early Practitioner of Structural Expressionism

Born in New Brunswick, Morse attended the School of Architecture at the University of Manitoba. He graduated with a prestigious travelling scholarship awarded to the nationwide finest graduating thesis, allowing him to work with and be influenced by the foremost engineering and architecture firm at the time – Arup in London, UK as well as Henning Larsen Architect in Copenhagen. He subsequently travelled and worked throughout Europe and across Canada. His most famous design, the Centennial Hall at

the University of Winnipeg, was prefabricated in steel with exposed structural and mechanical system, and is now viewed as a precursor of the Centre Pompidou in Paris. His other notable works include a master plan for the University of Athabasca and the Larsen Plads Waterfront redevelopment in Copenhagen, among others. Morse taught architecture at the University of Manitoba and McGill. Finally leaving the office culture, Lewis settled in West Vancouver to raise his family where he continues to work primarily on residential projects.
