Introducing West Coast Modern’s first townhouse offering.

Designed by the Office of McFarlane Biggar Architects + Designers, this peaceful retreat into nature has served as a source of inspiration for an internationally acclaimed designer couple behind global brands like BlackBerry and Nokia.

With its award-winning design informed by the Modernist movement on Vancouver’s North Shore, the Designer’s Townhouse is ready to inspire its next custodian.

On the Designer’s Townhouse being inspired by the Shalal Gardens by Fred Hollingsworth, 1951:

“West coast modern trailblazers like Ron Thom, Ned Pratt and Fred Hollingsworth adapted emerging principles of modern architecture to the North Vancouver context. They made modernism relaxed, created open plans to make room for the everyday and freely combined emerging materials and technologies - all without losing the highly livable modernist sophistication of the day.

The result is a neighbourhood composed of a broad range of housing types. Single family homes, duplexes, townhouses and multi-family homes all co-exist within the lush North Shore undergrowth. Prominent examples include the adjacent Shalal Garden projects designed by Fred T. Hollingsworth for developer J. Eric Allen. These architecturally significant multifamily developments are carefully sited on their sloping sites, feature nominally flat roofs, generous interior and exterior living spaces and clearly articulated upper volumes rendered in light coloured materials.”

Shalal Gardens by Fred Hollingsworth, 1951:

“For their time these apartments were considered quite innovative in the use of both horizontal and vertical space.”
