Pioneering the Post-and-Beam Boom
Bob Lewis, of Lewis Construction Company, was head of the most successful design-build firm in the post-war West Coast Modern movement. Such a prolific company that in its heyday employed 80 skilled men on a permanent basis and was was building 100+ homes a year, Lewis Construction was known as the ubiquitous design-build firm populating the North Shore with unapologetically simple
post-and-beam homes. Championing functional good design that was versatile and affordable, each Bob Lewis home was a unique post-and-beam configuration. A total of 114, or more than one third, of the houses designated as architecturally significant in the West Vancouver Survey of Significant Architecture was designed and built by Lewis Construction Company.
