Tower House
The next West Coast Modern home is ready for its new custodian.
Tower House is a pillar and social hub for the key cultural figures associated with Vancouver’s art and design movements in the 1960s-80s. Its original owner, Reinhard Derreth, was an influential graphic designer behind countless publications and exhibition catalogues for the Vancouver Art Gallery and artists and friends like Gordon Smith.
Much like a wellness retreat, Tower House stands tall amongst the old growth Douglas fir and cedar trees as if organically sprouted from the earth, reminiscent of the Japanese “shinrin-yoku” concept, whereby the forest is a place of wellbeing and happiness.
A unique product of the architect and homeowner working together for a site-specific, singular vision, it is designed in collaboration with Werner Forster, a mentee of Arthur Erickson and architect behind numerous famed restaurants like West, Il Giardino, and Blue Water Cafe.
Tower house has been perfectly preserved, awaiting its next family. Experience living privately within the forest in this iconic residence.

Werner Forster Architect
1930-2005
Born in Heidelberg, Germany, Forster studied at the University of Heidelberg and then at UBC, graduating in 1959.He was the architect behind Le Crocodile, restauranteur Jack Evrensel’s Blue Water Cafe and West, as well as all eight of Umberto Menghi’s restaurants, including Il Giardino. His love of earthy materials and the
handmade look earned him the nickname “Mr. Mediterranean.” A modernist at heart, his design of a 80s Vancouver Island cliff hanger made entirely of glass was featured on the cover of Western Living in 1988. He was among many other Vancouver architects and urbanists who counted Arthur Erickson as a mentor.
