Case Study House II

Introduction

West Coast Modern presents the Ron Thom Case Study House. A disappearing template for modern design.

An outlet for Ron Thom’s ideas, this mid-century modern is based on the Case Study House program. The program, a landmark of American architecture sought to respond to the postwar building boom with prototype modern homes that could be prototypes for mass production. The results of the program would define the modern home and extend influence not only across North America but around the world. West Coast Modern shares this icon of mid-century modernism, the Case Study House II through detailed documentation, photography, floor plans and sketches.

“An architect, no less than an artist, should be willing to fly in the face of what is established, and to create not what is acceptable but what will become accepted.”

Ron Thom
One of the pioneers of West Coast Modernism

Ron Thom (1923–1986)— made his name in British Columbia as an architect of dramatic, award-winning houses. He adapted house design tendencies from Frank Lloyd Wright and Richard Neutra to the specific requirements of the Pacific Northwest.

His approach informed a career that spanned almost four decades, during which time Thom and his associates designed landmark projects across the country. At different times several architects, who admired Ron assisted in the design of many personal residences. Among them were Barry Downs and Fred Hollingswoth. His body of work includes the BC Hydro building, the Copp, Carmichael, Dodek, Forrest and Case Study houses of the Vancouver region, and Massey College and Trent University in Ontario.
