Mullet House

Introduction

Deep in the leafy, sleepy streets of conservative Dunbar, D’Arcy Jones Architects designed and built what West Coast Modern has dubbed the Mullet House. Blending in with its neighbours, the Mullet House cleverly conceals bold, contemporary family living behind unassuming facades.

Indeed, the City of Vancouver’s RS-5 zoning is unequivocal; a street-facing façade must consistently follow the elevation and detailing of houses flanking either side. This project enthusiastically embraces this perhaps archaic approach to street-making by re-assembling the best elements from the adjacent houses and creating an agreeable street-view which, if you look closely, suggests a rich inner world.

Turning the key and opening the front door reveals a thoroughly modern, open-plan interior where natural light floods in through clerestory windows. Where poured concrete walls and staircases intersect with engineered hardwood floors. Where sliding glass doors open onto a mature, serene garden.

From an architectural standpoint, mullet houses are a thing. Dwell Magazine, the arbiter and curator of all things modern, even posts an annual “The Top Ten Mullet Houses” which includes entries from Melbourne to Austin, and San Francisco to Sydney.

West Coast Modern presents the Mullet House by the award-winning D’Arcy Jones Architects.
